Dear Sirs,
In his otherwise thoughtful and fascinating paper ( Int. J. Psycho-Anal. 2002, 83: 1345-59), Alfonso Sanchez-Medina announces that he is making a ‘new contribution’:‘This new contribution consists of the fact that the disorder known as perversion is not restricted to manifestations within sexual behaviour, and that there is thus a need to broaden its meaning by declaring that at the root of any perversion is a thought disorder that we can call perverse thought’ (p. 1346). Apparently Dr Sanchez-Medina is unaware of an extensive body of literature explicitly exploring the kind of thinking that underlies perversion in people without frank sexual perversion. A partial bibliography is appended.
