Enrico Edison Jones (1947-2003)

Enrico (‘Rico’) E. Jones, distinguished Professor of Clinical Psychology, psychoanalyst and psychoanalytic researcher, died of multiple myeloma on 29 March 2003. Jones was born in Munich, Germany, on 25 November 1947. Born of an African-American career-military father and a German mother who was an early-childhood educator, Jones lived in both Germany and Rochester, NY, in his youth. Following a Catholic high school education in Rochester, Rico took his undergraduate degree cum laude at Harvard in 1969 and in 1974 completed Ph.D. studies in Clinical Psychology at the University of California, Berkeley. He then joined the faculty of the Department of Psychology in which he trained and where he remained until his untimely death, having risen with alacrity to the rank of Professor and Director of the Clinical Psychology training program and Clinic.

Among the several training models for clinical psychology, it is the most stringent, calling for one to develop the motivation and competencies to be an able and productive clinician and researcher. Few achieve high watermarks in both. Rico was faithful to the charge and was abundantly fruitful in both research and practice. The early expression of his prodigious capacity to do both is to be found in his interest in the roles of race, class and gender in the psychotherapy process and outcome, spawned in part by his concern that psychology was neglectful of the psychotherapeutic needs of the urban poor. A critical review of research appears in Jones (1974). This paper was followed by systematic emp
