With the publication of this issue, we end 5½ years as joint Editors-in-Chief of IJP. We pass the baton to Dana Birksted-Breen and Robert Michels, with confidence in their abilities to carry on a tradition started many years ago by Ernest Jones with the assistance of Sigmund Freud. When we took over as Editors in 2001, IJP entered a new era by selecting the first non-British editor (GOG). This joint editorship—a North American and a Brit working together—proved to be auspicious. Consultation with one another on difficult manuscripts was always valuable and often essential. We enjoyed each other's company and became fast and, subsequently, enduring friends. When one of us was indisposed for one reason or another, the other editor could keep things running smoothly. Perhaps the most important feature of this new arrangement was that it symbolized a principal theme of our tenure—namely, internationalization of IJP.
While IJP has always been the premier journal in the field, with the largest subscriber base and the most widely cited articles, various colleagues around the world had made it known to us that they sometimes questioned whether the publication was truly international. The internet had transformed the world into a global village, and psychoanalysis could not survive if it remained parochial. We decided to make sure that, under our tenure, IJP would reach out to as many analysts as possible, wherever they were. A cornerstone of this strategy was to engage more analysts from around the world as both reviewers and authors. We enlisted a ‘community of analysts’ to keep us abreast of developments in the analytic communities in every region of the globe.
In the service of internationalization, we enlisted the help of our Latin American regional editors, Elias Mallet da Rocha Barros with the capable help of Juan Francisco Jordán-Moore, and our European regional editor, Jean-Michel Quinodoz, and later, Antonino Ferro. With their able assistance, for which we are gratef
