Dear Editors,
Thank you for the opportunity to engage with Dr Paniagua's letter following my paper, Repression and splitting: Towards a method of conceptual comparison (Hinshelwood, 2008). It is heartening that he wanted to engage with my thinking, because, as my quote from Bion asserted, psychoanalytic controversy tends unfortunately to be ‘empty beating of the air’. In trying to compare repression and splitting, I knew I would be likely to enter into the centre of the cock-fighting. May I take the opportunity to address Dr Paniagua direct in the pages of the IJP?
