Following a period of consultation and discussion the Institute of Psychoanalysis has decided that future editors of the Journal will be chosen by an Appointments Committee elected by a newly formed College of the International Journal of Psychoanalysis.
Members of the International Psychoanalytic Association throughout the world who have been closely involved with editing, reviewing and writing for the Journal in recent years, will shortly be invited to join the College as fellows. Their task will be to elect an Executive and Appointments Committee from among their number to oversee the process of searching out and appointing the Editor and Regional Editors and to oversee the process of admission to the College itself. Fellowship of the College will be renewable every three years based on a formula representing participation as editors, reviewers or authors.
For the first three year term (April 2011-March 2014) fellowship of the College will be offered to all current members of the various editorial boards, some additional reviewers from each board who have advised on a significant number of papers in 2009 and 2010 and some authors whose papers have been most popular (as measured by downloads in 2008 and 2009).
Renewal of fellowship in subsequent years will be based on a points system calculated to reflect contributions (editing, reviewing, and writing) to the journal during the previous three year period. In this way the fellowship of the College will be continually adjusted to ensure it is always made up of colleagues most active in the Journal, wherever they reside.
The main function of College fellows will be to elect an Executive (comprising four vice-chairs drawn from each editorial board region), whose task will be to run the College, and also an Appointments Committee, whose role is to oversee the appointment of Editors in Chief and Regional Editors as and when these are required. The Editorial Appointment Committee will comprise the Electoral College Executive
