Last Year in Marienbad is a notoriously difficult film to understand. Unlike other papers where from the start one has an internal approximation of a structure, I found this to be impossible. Nevertheless the film continued to haunt me as it has countless others. I played with the idea of writing as my thoughts developed but came to the conclusion it would have been incomprehensible, and furthermore lack elegance. I spent many hours thinking about the ‘play within a film’ scene which I found initially totally bemusing, then quite suddenly I realized that it could be understood as an infinite set, which with hindsight seemed obvious, and from that point the analysis of the film began to fall into place. Matte Blanco's complex theory of the mind, which does not dichotomize between consciousness and the unconscious, and holds the capacity to interpret the movement of thought through an experience, then thinking, remembering, daydreaming, fantasizing, dreaming, and nightmares, is essentially what this film is about.1 The paper is best ‘read’ holding this perspective in mind since it is written in that style.
