It is our sad duty to inform the IJP community of the death of Eric Nuetzel, M.D. on May 12, 2014. Eric was a member of the IJP Executive as well as the Editorial Board, and his wise counsel was highly valued on both. A Training and Supervising Analyst at the St. Louis Psychoanalytic Institute and Professor of Psychiatry at Washington University School of Medicine, he was active in clinical practice, teaching, and writing. He was expert in both clinical and applied psychoanalysis: after training in medicine, psychiatry, and psychoanalysis, he went on to earn an AM in theater from Washington University. In addition, Eric was a prominent figure in North American psychoanalytic organizations, having served as director of the St. Louis Psychoanalytic Institute and as Chair of the American Psychoanalytic Association's Board of Professional Standards.
Eric was known for his unusual integrity and sense of fairness as well as his intellect and creativity. He is survived by his wife, Susan; his children, J. Arlington and Leah; his mother, Sally; and his brothers and sisters, John Nuetzel, Vicky Holton, Suzy Wells, Phil Nuetzel, and Tina McNulty. He will be much missed.
