The panel ‘Intimacy in Negative Capability,’ presented by Evelyn Pye, Desy Safán-Gerard, and Marilia Aisenstein-Averoff, and chaired by Ricardo Stramer, offered a rich and lively exploration of negative capability in creativity and in psychoanalysis, regarding both in the mind of the patient and the analyst, as well as in the arts. To begin, Stramer introduced the notion of intimacy between objects, and the idea that negative capability (a term taken from John Keats) is what transforms the unthinkable into the creation of a thought. Through containing frustration, the mind can thus develop the function of symbolization.
