Marina Altmann first underlined concepts from different authors – Otto Kernberg, Ricardo Bernardi, Morris Eagle and Linda Goodman – on critical thinking in the transmission of psychoanalysis.
She stated that critical thinking is the analysis of facts to form a judgement. It is a purposeful, self-regulatory judgement with results in interpretation, analysis, evaluation and inference, as well as explanation of the evidential, conceptual, methodological, criteriological or contextual considerations upon which that judgement is based.
Second, Altmann presented results of a research study on psychoanalytic training and psychoanalytic professional practice in Latin America. (2005–2006), in which the researchers investigated how analytical training prepares for the performance of analysts as professionals. Findings showed that the analysts’ self-perception (after five years of being an analyst), despite their not entirely favourable view of the context, was to maintain their main professional identity as psychoanalysts: 77% of the analysts said it was very likely that they would maintain their professional identity as psychoanalysts in five years’ time, and 83% said it was very likely that they would apply their analytical capacity in their clinical practice. There was a strong feeling and desire to continue developing the analytical function: 99% said that their professional identity would be to be an analyst in the next five years and to apply their analytical capacity in their clinical practice. A strong analytical identity was envisioned, but an important number of analysts nevertheless perceived difficulties for the future of psychoanalysis (in some countries more than in others).
In general, there was an opinion that their own training analysis had helped analysts improve their understanding of themselves (4.3 using the following scale: 1, Nothing; 2, Litt
