Dear Editor,
In her account of the panel on “Confidentiality as a Container” at the 51st IPA Congress in London in July 2019, Gianina Micu (2019) succeeds in conveying the main themes that were discussed, but she incorrectly reports me as saying that in situations of remote analysis the asymmetry provided by the analytic relationship no longer exists. I did not say that.
The only reference to “asymmetry” in my presentation (Churcher 2019) concerned a difference in security between the classical and the telecommunicative settings, where I said: “This asymmetry is not dispelled by anecdotes about successful eavesdropping in the classical setting, or by an absence of reports of actual breaches in the telecommunicative setting.” Further elaboration of this difference between the two types of setting can be found in the Report of the IPA Confidentiality Committee (IPA 2018).
