I would like to thank Per Anthi very much for his most interesting contribution. I think he is quite right that I do not explain properly the reason for the Reich quotation - and I am grateful for the details about its provenance. I agree its relevance is left somewhat allusive, and I welcome this opportunity to make it a bit clearer.
In the paper I mention the penetration of the commodity form into ever-more aspects of our lives; this is an aspect of the ever-increasing hegemony of neoliberalism. An important manifestation of this cultural shift is found in the way that even aspects of personhood can acquire, in the mind of the subject, a commoditized form. In my view, this transformation, which affects the way we think about ourselves and the world we move in, has not come out of the blue but serves certain dominant interests. The point, then, that I am making is that this changed culture is part of the soil in which transgender ideology has germinated so rapidly.
I agree completely about the relevance of Bauman's works to this whole discussion. I was also interested to hear about this treatment of an intersex case which must be extremely rare, and I urge Per Anthi to write this up. Lastly, I was fascinated to hear about Hemingway, most of which was new to me.
