New patients, new pathologies, renewed instruments in the psychoanalytical arsenal, these are the ingredients of this book, so Stefano Bolognini informs the reader in his preface. The exploration of such a vast field requires – he adds – “psychoanalysts of advanced frontiers”, such as the three authors, who divide the task between themselves into three distinct parts.
Tiziana Bastianini begins with the study of the emergence of the contents of the unconscious in its heterogeneous forms, when the psychic intensity is unable to be contained or expressed in words. There are psychic forces that cannot express themselves in representations of ideas and words. They employ other expressive means, both in the patient – acting, somatizations, gestures – and in the analyst – also acting, somatizations and countertransference problems.
What to do? Broaden metapsychology, listen not only to words, but also to bodies in their psychosomatic totality. Hence there is a type of listening, no longer just with the ears, but also with the body: the incarnate listening. New ideas and instruments have already enriched psychoanalytical research, of which the author provides an accurate list and presentation of the well-known authors, both in Italy and in the psychoanalytical oecumene, giving the reader concise and precise information.
To achieve what? To allow the illumination of the unconscious as much as possible, and hence to rediscover words and those parts which have been lost due to repression (repressed unconscious), and to express in words those parts which still must be found for the first time (non-repressed unconscious). It is significant that in order to achieve this, Bastianini, as with the other authors, not only utilizes the contribution from many colleagues and research, but also makes continual reference to Freud and his works: from the early Freud, that of the Project for a Scientific Psychology, passing though his entire output, to the Results, Ideas, Problems, always with
