In this paper I would like to concentrate on some peculiarities and differences between the mental attitude of the analyst when working with children and with adults. The comparison develops initially from the two different settings, which contemplate for the children, and as a consequence also for their analyst, a major freedom both in movement and in expression, which is precluded for analysts who deal with adults.
Freud's metaphor of Constructions in Analysis of the two psychic scenes, both of the patient and of the analyst, separated, made me think about the reality of the session as a “third scene”. A psychic place which, given its dynamics and its function, solicits the activity of other psychic places. A place in which the analyst, who works with children, needs to enter, coming out from his internal scene, in order to perceive, to move and to participate actively to the child's play. Through some considerations on themes like setting, play, anaclisis and symbolization process, I developed a comparison between work with children and work with adults, with regards to the mental attitude of the analyst at work, to the different possibilities of recognising and managing the phantasy which animates himself in the third scene, to the countertransference, and to the different economic balances which are realized in this way.
