The author observes the gradual development of an elusive eroticized transference in a severely depressed 11-year-old girl. The personal and theoretical transformation that the therapist undergoes during countertransference reveals an acceptance of maternal homosexual transference in the analytic space that reflects a need to react to the child's trauma of a perceived perverse object's inability to process gender differences. These countertransferential transformations facilitate changes in the child's representation of an internalized primal scene and allow her to develop genuine, live-object relations.
The author considers these theoretical transformations under a countertransferential influence: Ferenczi and Winnicott's concepts are used to explore the unconscious countertransferential reactions to the intersubjective field co-created during the therapy sessions and to rediscover the analytic contribution of McDougall's application of the Oedipus complex to child therapy.
