Due to pubertal transformations, and both for the immaturity of the psychic functions, and for the conflict between ostentation and secrecy, preadolescents have difficulties representing and communicating their internal upheavals, which present a constant challenge for the analyst. A technical solution that makes the subjectivation process more palatable to preadolescents is the manipulation of play-doh, a game that knows no age, an expressive form able to conjure up fantasies and representations in the analytic field that are otherwise barely accessible. The goal of this paper is to illustrate the use of the play-doh as an analytic tool in the context of adolescents’ subjectivation process, with a focus on patients that are ten to fourteen years old. The paper examines the clinical history of an adopted boy, who, thanks to play-doh was able to develop the capacity to dream his own experience and to represent internal states that had until then lacked a representation.
