This review paper proposes an overview of four studies, conducted by Howard Shevrin and his team at the University of Michigan, with subliminal priming methodology at stringent presentation conditions which enable to access deep unconscious processes. The results show evidence for unconscious avoidance behaviour depending on subject factors. With Event Related Potentials measurements, three clinical studies show how synchronisation of a specific brain wave, the alpha wave, known in cognitive research for its inhibitory function, is also induced by subliminally presented conflictual subject-specific stimuli. Therefore, alpha synchronisation could also serve as an inhibitory brain mechanism of repression. Moreover, by showing that the group of unconscious conflict phrases, inferred by clinicians from clinical interviews with the participants, have a similar brain behaviour, Shevrin and team provide evidence that these inferences are not simply clinician-dependent subjective interpretations but also imply some form of independent mental reality.
