This paper explores a certain psychic predisposition which precedes therapy and may serve as its focal point. This psychic focal point is the “distress-paradigm”, a dynamic structure which encompasses a disposition vis-à-vis distress in terms of particular triggering circumstances, emotional experiences and behavioral responses. This paradigm is formed through primary thinking, involving an unconscious dialectic motion between the aspects of abstract unity and concrete multiplicity. In order to address this psychic structure, the therapist applies a focused and active discourse which aims to trace to manner in which the “distress-paradigm” shapes the patient's various life-events, influencing the very occurrence of distressing situations though their unconscious interpretation.
