This paper reports on a process analysis of the work of a group of psychoanalytic psychotherapists conjointly engaged in provision of psychotherapy, clinical supervision and research. The aim of the analysis was to better understand the psychological challenges presented by this complex but potentially very important task. Operating within an action research paradigm, the group discussed 22 psychoanalytically informed treatments of patients with psychosomatic disorders they were treating over an 18-month period. The task of the group was to identify resistance patterns in the group of cases and to assist the treating clinicians to effectively manage resistance. Supervision group meetings were recorded and the work of the group was analysed using a framework derived from the work of Bion and Pichon-Rivière' on group processes. The analysis showed fluctuations and compromise formations between ba and W during the period the group met. We were able to develop factors that shifted the group in the direction of ba and factors that restore W. We think that many of the processes observed in this study will equally characterise the experience of other peer supervision groups. An understanding of such group processes is likely to enhance the work of such groups.
