Psychoanalytic Film Discussion Clubs are well established in various parts of the world. The authors are Psychiatry Trainees in Leeds, where no such club existed. Their passion for cinema and psychoanalysis was the driving force behind the initiative to set up this club in order to encourage psychoanalytic thinking and discussion through the media of film among Psychiatry Trainees.
The Club is hosted at the homes of the group members in order to create a comfortable atmosphere conducive to free association. A Psychoanalyst presents his/her interpretation of the film and leads a discussion on the emerging psychoanalytic themes.
The Club helps to uncover the psychoanalytic themes within the films discussed and illustrates the power of film in promoting psychoanalytic thinking among Psychiatry Trainees. As in analysis, the authors endeavor to create a space where dreams, fantasies and emotions can be explored and thought about, to offer new insights into the unconscious and ultimately lay the foundation for a journey that only begins in front of the silver screen. It is up to the viewer to extend this journey beyond the imagery created by the producers and directors of the individual film and ultimately learn more about themselves and the world.
