This research aims to analyze Moniza Alvi’s poem Presents From My Aunts in Pakistan from psychoanalytical perspective through a close reading of the text. Poststructuralism views human subjectivity as a continuous process where different discourses continuously shape it. The selected text suggests the dilemma of crisis heterotopia and reveals indecisiveness on part of the poetess regarding her national/cultural identity. This indecisiveness creates a split in her psyche with reference to her identity. The differences of two cultures and her mixed feelings towards her origin continue to haunt her, resulting into a psychological conflict between the real and the imaginary. The two different cultures, as two different discourses, in the poem are analyzed at psychological level in the light of Lacanian Psychoanalysis. The study concludes that the poem is a psychological reflection and expression of a split subject.
