The author explores the superego as being comprised of different levels of ego ideals. The schema is presented through examples of ambition and their relation to a good name in the community, making it to the top of power hierarchies and being the best, and being the best there has ever been and someone who is semi-divine or magical. The author links these different stages to ego ideal tensions that show up in such things as the compulsive need to make the best use of time, and the loss of certain ego functions like memory. Clinical examples are given to illustrate the use of self-statements and you-statements that return these intrapsychic conflicts to their external origins.
