Two central and significant concepts that were part of the origins and development of psychoanalytic theory; repression and dissociation, are examined through a conceptual comparative study. The main purpose included preventing unnecessary and potentially confusing multiplication of concepts. An attempt to identify whether there is a real and significant conceptual difference between these concepts was made in order to provide clarity and rigour to the psychoanalytic terminology.
This study explored the different semantic and phenomenological aspects of the concepts through the review of their operational definitions, in order to establish whether repression and dissociation describe the same clinical phenomenon. In addition, the model proposed by the International Psychoanalytic Association Committee on Conceptual Integration (Boehleber et al., 2013) was followed, incorporating a dimensional analysis of the concepts. The findings of the study seem to suggest that the theoretical differences between repression and dissociation are not as large as one may think when they are both conceptualized as defence mechanisms.
