For one year I wrote down one sentence spoken by the patient in every session. I collated the sentences daily. Each day's sentences were organized to resemble a “verse”. Each verse seems to be spoken by a single enigmatic voice. This apparent enigma points to an underlying common source for the language of yearning and hope—the central framing affects of psychoanalytic practice. The text illuminates this usually unavailable common source, binding patients both to each other and to the analysts who hear them.
