The aim of this study was to investigate if Freud had any explicit reasons for abandoning his seduction theory. The authors attempted to analyze a letter from Freud to Fliess, dated September 21, 1897, in which he outlines four groups of reasons supporting his decision. However, it was not possible to identify any further explicit reasons. The letter allows for reflection upon Freud's theoretical work, although it also shows that he never articulated correlations between his two theories, therefore rendering subsequent analysis of the incestuous relationships only theoretical.
