This paper proposes a research method which could be described as a psychoanalytic process and describes how transference and countertransference, an understanding of projections and dreams can form part of psychoanalytic discourse analysis. The paper is divided into four main sections: introduction and background, theory, practice and a conclusion. In the introductory section of the paper I outline recent approaches to research and psychoanalysis and describe the background to, and development of, psychoanalytic discourse analysis, discursive psychology and reflexivity. The theoretical section focuses on describing the combination of discourse analysis and psychoanalysis, including reflexivity and countertransference. In the practice section examples are given from research into the psychoanalytic containment of people diagnosed with personality disorder. These examples show how the different aspects of the research method: psychoanalytic discourse analysis and psychoanalytic reflexivity can be brought together to enhance findings. The conclusion proposes that reflexive psychoanalytic discourse analysis is a way of undertaking research which uses an established social science method combined with an experiential psychoanalytic approach.
