Through a rereading of the entire Winnicott's production, the author proposes himself to track those theoretical-clinical elements that can conduce to the formulation of a ‘theory of the transference’. To this end, starting from the first formulations related to the transference, the author identifies some significant areas: the regression to dependency, the work with the difficult cases, the fear of breakdown, the use of an object, the interpretation. It is so showed the way that, from a concept of the transference closer to Freud's and Klein's theorizations, and clinically utilizable with psychoneurotic patients, leads Winnicott to a proper specific ‘theory of the transference’.
