Scientific discoveries in brain development, structure and synaptic pruning confirm several aspects of Freud's observations on psychosexual stages, polymorphous perversion, infant amnesia and memory traces. New scientific technology like magnetoencephalography and proteomics could be use to measure psychoanalytic therapeutic results and to further support the participation of instincts and drives in mental functioning. Despite the neurosciences enormous progress they are not advanced enough to understand in detail brain functions mainly due to the lack of knowledge of how glial cell co-participate in their regulation making difficult to include their findings to modify metapsychology directed to diminish mental suffering. Finally an analysis is made on the evolution of metapsychology constructs where the lag on their modification in light of new scientific discoveries could be affecting the future of psychoanalysis.
