Besides the most well known definition of narcissism as the “libidinal cathexis of ego” Freud also defined narcissism as narcissistic satisfaction that is “ensured” by an ego ideal. The author claims that the first model of narcissism as energy directed towards oneself helps better understand psychotic behaviour. The second model of narcissism, where narcissistic energy comes from the “ego ideal” is more concordant with the recent understanding of narcissism, which speaks about narcissism in the context of self-esteem. Do those two models contradict or enrich each other? The author attempts to compare the two models of narcissism based on the cases of hypochondria and narcissistic behaviour and argues that it is also possible to unite those definitions to help us better understand the concept of “narcissistic injury”.
