In this article, the author uses the astrophysical term of the ‘black hole’ to describe the subjective experience of patients who experienced trauma in their inter-personal relationships, such as sudden separation or adultery. These experiences lead to deep regressive states in which the patient has to meet psychic deadness which he tried to avoid during his life. The analyst also has to face this deadness while he is spun with the patient in the black hole, as the patient encounters various self-states that were dissociated. It is argued that the fall into the black hole influences both on the therapist's countertransference and the patient who is exposed to different emotional truths about his life.
