Strachey's paper „The Nature of the Therapeutic Action of Psycho-Analysis“ of 1934 is one of the most important of the psychoanalytical literature. He comprehends the mutative interpretation as a two-phase process, stressing the super-ego dynamics. The author discusses critically selected aspects of Strachey's work. According to the author, Strachey's central theses can be reinterpreted if Freud's view of the therapeutic efficacy of an interpretation is combined with the concept of the present moment (O). For Freud the neurosis must be „slain“ both in presentia, i.e. in the analytic relationship, as well as in connection with the empirical reality. This process takes place in two different phases and under the testimony of the analyst, both in conflictual and in traumatic dynamics. In this way the central moments of Strachey's considerations are sublated in the new model. A brief clinical example accompanies the considerations.
