In this paper, some questions addressing the symbolic order and the most primitive aspects of conveying meaning will be discussed — those regarding the original relation. I use this term in the Freudian sense, as the founding relation with the primary object. The mother, or whoever performs her function, constitutes the first object of love, which will be transformed by the work of negative (André Green), turned into a set of partial objects, and later reencountered as a total object. Marks from this inaugural moment, however, continue to exist in psychic life as traits or remnants from early anxieties and forms of care, and they carry within themselves characteristics from that time. One of the central aspects of a clinical setting — self-reflectiveness and the capacity to take oneself as an object of investigation, as well as its working throughout language — will be addressed, as it continuously resignifies those marks and modulations from the primary object relation. So this is an investigation of the maternal field in psyche and its relation with conveying meaning, which precedes the acquisition of shared language, but is already connected to it.
