Literary works featuring the theme of the double present a protagonist who encounters his/her double, or disintegrates into several self-parts. This theme has been extensively studied from a psychanalytical perspective. However, less attention has been devoted to the linguistic aspects of doubling as a phenomenon, and to the psychoanalytical implications of the latter. The present paper seeks to delve into the boundary between linguistics and psychoanalysis as reflected in several prominent writings by Freud, Lacan, de Saussure and Jakobson, in order to further enrich the discourse revolving literary doubleness.
