While some view resistance as fundamental to psychoanalysis, others consider it outmoded. This paper reviews how resistance fell out of favor and examines its relevance today. I suggest that there are strong motivations for many patients to resist the intrinsic direction of a treatment that leads them to their early family environment. Patients mount an unrelenting resistance to the analyst's disturbance of foundational early templates. The need to address these resistances with action—often anathema to psychoanalysis—along with understanding, is suggested.
