Since the dawn of psychoanalysis, important efforts have been made to extend its scope both theoretically and practically. The challenge has been, and remains, that of thinking and practicing in ways that are open and creative. However, in doing so, psychoanalysis in the community requires venturing outside the classical setting. The author proposes to reflect on some of the experiences of the pioneers (Freud, Ferenczi, Bettleheim, etc.) in order to learn from their achievements and their errors. The idea is suggested that working outside the classical setting invites us to put our preconceived ideas on hold, to observe the reality that is offered to us and within us, to accept the risk of seeing our internal setting disturbed while striving to continue to think in situations that are sometimes troubling.
