Psychoanalysis has, for the most part, been concerned with the verbal and visual dimensions of the analytic encounter – the words spoken and the visible physical behaviours, or mental visual images that analyst and patient may associate to. Less focused, are the aural dimensions of the analytic encounter, what Francis Grier refers to as ‘the musicality in the consulting room’. In this paper, we focus our curiosity on the musicality of the buzzer, when the patient announces their arrival at the consulting room. With reference to research that highlights the importance of musicality in early infant development, including in-utero development, we reflect on the musicality of the buzzer as a possible communication of the early maternal environment of the patient.
