Piero is around 20 years old. We first met when he was just under 3 and had been diagnosed with autism. Piero doesn't talk but writes deep texts and poetry however; not alone, he needs to feel the contact of another person to be able to do so. In our sessions together he has never written but we have been able to find a way to draw together that allows a method of communication on the themes that emerge to be most important to him. Piero's world isn't empty, it is difficult for the analyst to reach and it is difficult for the patient to express, but it is a rich and evolved world. As dense as a black hole of which however something is able to escape. After describing how we were able to discover in session the technique of scribbling, I have tried to draw some parallels between his writing (hiding behind/inside the other person) and his drawing passing through me as his analyst. The individuality, his own subjectivation, seem unable to push themselves to the point of self-recognition in their final product, or an identity solid enough to be able to say “I did that”.
