It is increasingly common for children to express doubts about their gender identity and their choice of sources of sexual pleasure; adolescents report difficulties in accepting their own bodies. The author hypotheses the occurrence of what he calls the Early Polymorphous Oedipus, derived from the Freudian concept of polymorphous perverse sexuality; drives that fuel unconscious fantasies and interfere with identification processes. Repressive systems and other defensive and symbolic mechanisms are intrinsic to the fundamental constitution of the psychic structure and functioning. The metapsychological process of the mind is a result of family relationships and cultural influences. Transformations occur over time at different speeds and intensities, changing our ways of feeling, thinking, being and acting. These changes give way to new identity and diversity configurations, as one searches for investments or cathexis in polymorphic objects. In our globalised contemporary world, characterised by the ever-increasing speed of communication and technological change, and factors which contribute to the release and practical realisation of fantasies and the creation of multiple psychic spaces, are the result of multiple affective, interacting links. The metapsychology of the third type comes to the fore. The concepts of Link Theory contribute to understanding the complexity of the analysed phenomena.
