Psychoanalytic metapsychology describes the many concepts and mechanisms which contribute to psychic function according to Freudian psychoanalysis. However, metapsychology comprises abstract concepts governing only one aspect of how individuals function. This paper addresses a far more all-encompassing dimension of human life, Dasein, a philosophical concept usually translated as “being-in-the-world,” or, perhaps, “existence.” As applied to human beings, it encompasses everything which formed, happened to and within that individual from conception up to the ongoing present moment of their existence. No two persons are wholly alike. The Daseins of both parties in a psychoanalytic treatment play a role in their ongoing relationship, the transference/countertransference.
