Lucyann Carlton has presented a moving, elegant, and open presentation of an effective analysis with a severely traumatized woman. Her approach generally provides an indispensable calming atmosphere for the patient and helps her manage very disturbing emotional-relational states. It also supports the analyst's own comfort in this excruciating situation. However, it probably precludes the more extensive exploration of abusive, violent fantasies that are closer to Renee's fundamental experience. These concerns are developed with regard to the analytic process around the first dream presented in Section 4, and then with regard to the very complex set of projective enactments involved in Renee agreeing to Carlton's request to present the case material.
