In this paper, I shall present a clinical case that was characterized by a moment of impasse and by some enactments. I suggest that, in overcoming the impasse, great importance is to be attributed to the deconstruction of some aspects of the analyst's subjectivity, in order to recover—by means of introspection—contact with oneself such as to improve empathy with the patient. A theoretical-clinical notion that I used in this case is the concept of “surrender” as theorized by Emanuel Ghent. At the end of the vignette I propose, in the dialogue with my patient, a particular intertwining of empathy and surrender.
