This article presents key relational “now moments” (transformative moments of recognition) with my grandfather during childhood and early adulthood, to illustrate the fundamental experience of intimacy that formed the basis of my psychoanalytic ethos. As a psychoanalyst, I seek to engage in a potentially transformative recognition process that can foster profound and lasting state-shifts and open previously inaccessible realms of intersubjective relatedness, affect regulation, mentalization, attachment, and empathic understanding. This article extends my previous work on therapeutic negotiations in the face of what has been, through a history of misrecognitions in the life of the patient, relationally nonnegotiable.
