To run the gauntlet of a multiple relationship is an experience with which most therapists contend at some time or other. Inadvertent or unavoidable multiple relationships may inflame the therapist's and client's primary vulnerabilities (Elkind, 1992), yielding a discrepancy between the client's needs and the clinician's responsiveness (Bacal and Newman, 1990). The result may be a break in the selfobject tie and a rupture in the therapeutic relationship (Kohut, 1977; 1984). The core of this article examines co-transferences (Orange, 1995) shaping five stages of ruptured multiple relationships: blindness, awakening, struggle, enlightenment, and reconciliation (Symington, 2004). This article also proposes some preliminary guidelines for working through co-constructed transferences in a multiple relationship.
