In this autobiographical sketch, the author examines the complicated relation between love and work in her life and in self-psychological theory. The author explains her understanding of empathy as the ultimate anti-trauma remedy—a potent means by which the uncertainty of the human condition is rendered more bearable. Given the therapeutic power of empathic responsiveness, it is little wonder that both patients and therapists suffer in its absence. The author describes her darkest moments as an analyst as having come when, threatened with retraumatization in an analytic encounter, she found herself incapable of responding to patients in ways they experience as empathic.
