Hazel Ipp's treatment of Nell illustrates a process of mutual transformation. Nell came from South Africa to Canada. Hazel and she similarly reacted to their moves and the social and political conditions that necessitated them. Hazel described having sequestered her South African experiences. These memories were now reanimated by Nell when she recounted her courageous political activism against apartheid. In the course of the treatment, Nell's affect tolerance increased, and Hazel's “amputated,” “sequestered” history became integrated. My reading of the case suggests that Hazel had kept her South African experiences frozen, the way in which we might keep food in deep freeze, ready to thaw and serve at a suitable occasion with a guest worthy of sharing this gift.
