This discussion offers a way in which a self psychologically informed developmental and therapeutic approach, emphasizing the selfobject needs and tranferences, may expand the understanding of Ayda's case and affect the ways of intervening. It is suggested that, rather than viewing the patient's use of songs as creating a gap between her and her therapist, it can be viewed as an attempt at bridging the gap which, in her experience, came between them. It is also suggested that the songs do not necessarily convey a hidden, symbolic message that needs deciphering and interpretation but, rather, that it may be useful to consider them as accurately and directly expressing and communicating the patient's developmental trajectory and her evolving state of self.
