Sucharov's illustrative case and ideas about a conceptual framework for engaging and working with issues of politics, race, and class are discussed in this article. Identifying strongly with the constraints and conceptual attempts to challenge the dominance of the legal and medical discourses that Sucharov encountered, the author describes a range of “heartbreaking” and “heartwarming” feelings evoked by his article. Noting that the same ideologies that impelled her to walk away from the fight affected Sucharov's obviously painful decision to withdraw from his advocacy position, the author draws attention to the fact that little seems to have changed in the last 15 years. She concludes with a statement that, if conceptual frameworks like Sucharov's continue to be seen as mere scribbles in the margins, the dominance of these pervasive and pernicious ideologies will never be effectively challenged.
