This volume of Psychoanalysis, Self and Context is devoted to the treatment of children and adolescents and honors the entire scope of teaching, writing and mentoring of Anna Ornstein. The reader will find the clinical narratives, theoretical musings and therapists’ reflections to be compelling, intellectually challenging, heartwarming and heartbreaking. Anna Ornstein’s many theoretical and clinical contributions to our field, her inspiring spirit and unending energy and dedication to psychoanalytic self psychology fuel the conceptualization and creation of this volume.
How better to honor Anna — teacher, mentor and friend to most if not all of the child and adolescent clinicians of our global community– than to curate this special issue that highlights clinical process in working with children, adolescents and their families.
It is our hope that these articles reflect Anna’s incisive mind, as well as her ability to weave and integrate complex clinical and theoretical material. In fact, we offer a small taste of just this in her discussion of Taly Hochstadter and Christa Paulinz’s case vignettes.
Dr. Ornstein’s innovative thinking, openness to new ideas and vital spirited voice has enriched our clinical world. For years, we have listened to Anna’s presentations and read her papers (over 100 strong). Our child and adolescent clinical community references and re-references her papers; from her early groundbreaking paper, The Dread to Repeat and the New Beginning (1974), to Making Contact with the Inner World of the Child (1977) to her latest works on caretakers and children. Anna has inspired us to be open and rethink concepts about development, about clinical process and about the process of recovery following the survival of extreme conditions
As a valued teacher, supervisor and mentor, Anna Ornstein emphasizes the intergenerational transmission of values and ideals, which informs and grounds all of us in a deep respect and appreciation for relationships and life.
