Philip Cushman is right to call our attention to the Hoffman Report, the formal detailing of the American Psychological Association’s (APA’s) collusion with the torture program implemented by the U.S. government in the aftermath of September 11. My perspective differs from Cushman’s in viewing the APA’s collusion as fundamentally a failure of moral action, as opposed to a failure of moral reasoning; in questioning the value of a hermeneutic perspective as offering a way of forestalling such ethical disasters; and in questioning the role that a relationally refashioned psychotherapy can play in the “remoralization” project he calls for.
