In her article “Emmanuel Levinas and the ‘Specter of Masochism’: A Cross-Disciplinary Confusion of Tongues,” Levinas scholar Simone Drichel takes up the challenge to read Emmanuel Ghent’s work as an antidote to psychoanalysts’ misunderstandings of Levinasian responsibility as masochistic. In addition, she develops an elegant account based on D. W. Winnicott, citing his desire to turn us invulnerable ones into sufferers. From there her return to Emmanuel Levinas, with his challenging language, becomes actually graceful. Having already linked masochism to narcissism as means of coping with psychological trauma, she then invokes Levinas as he linked philosophical egoism with narcissism and inverted ordinary accounts of subjectivity. She makes her “cross-disciplinary” turn clear, but the connections clear as well, creating a model for those who want to contribute across disciplines and discourses.
