This discussion of Hagman’s article on self-agency expands and elaborates upon the understanding of defense, the paradoxical ways early coping strategies can impede and yet express a sense of agency, and the role of forward edge interpretation in restoring both ownership of one’s choices and personal agency. Finally, the author discusses how a sense of agency can be both threatened and restored in the broader context of historical and political events.
